New Online Course Celebrates the Rich Legacy of Black Canadians

Discover the vibrant history and achievements of Black Canadians with the University of Alberta's latest micro-course, "Black Canadians: History, Presence, and Anti-Racist Futures." This on-demand course delves into the profound impact of Black Canadians from the nation's inception to its ongoing journey.

Led by course director Andy Knight, a political scientist and provost fellow in Black excellence and leadership at U of A, this micro-course confronts systemic racism and unconscious biases within Canadian institutions. Knight describes this form of racism as "polite racism," shedding light on the tendency to overlook and minimize the challenges faced by Black communities in Canada.

In collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Brandon Wint, the course unfolds across four concise modules on Coursera, a leading online learning platform. Beyond rectifying gaps in academic curricula, the course aims to dismantle white supremacist ideologies by fostering a deeper understanding of Black history and experiences, extending its reach to high school students and the wider community.

Knight emphasizes the course's tribute to the diverse narratives of Black migration, resilience, activism, and creativity in Canada. Inspired by moments like the "George Floyd moment" in 2020, the course invites learners of all backgrounds to reflect on the constructs of race and identity, ultimately fostering a sense of empowerment and unity.

Participants can engage with the course at their own pace, gaining insights into pivotal events like the Underground Railroad and the civil rights movement, alongside celebrating the contributions of Black Canadian artists, musicians, and writers.

The course offers a transformative learning experience, encouraging a collective recognition of diversity as a cornerstone of strength and progress for Canada. Whether pursuing personal enrichment or seeking professional development, learners can access the course for free or opt for a completion certificate for a nominal fee.
