At Afros in tha City, we believe technology should strengthen journalism—not replace it.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important tool in publishing. It can help organize information, improve workflows, transcribe interviews, summarize research, and support creative brainstorming. However, AI does not replace the lived experiences, voices, relationships, or editorial judgment that define our publication.

As an independent Canadian media platform, we remain committed to journalism that is thoughtful, accountable, and rooted in community.

Our Principles

Human Stories Come First

Every story begins with people.

The interviews we conduct, the relationships we build, the communities we serve, and the lived experiences we document are the foundation of our work. AI may assist our process, but it can never replace authentic human voices.

Editorial Decisions Remain Human

Our editorial team is responsible for every story we publish.

AI may assist with organization, transcription, editing suggestions, or research support, but decisions about what we publish, how stories are framed, and the standards we uphold are always made by people.

Accuracy Before Speed

We believe trust is earned through accuracy.

Information generated by AI is treated as a starting point—not a verified source. Whenever AI contributes to research, facts are independently reviewed and verified before publication whenever possible.

Community Before Algorithms

Our responsibility is to the communities we serve—not to trends, algorithms, or engagement metrics.

We strive to represent individuals and communities fairly, respectfully, and with appropriate context while recognizing the diversity of Black experiences across Canada and the global diaspora.

Transparency

We believe readers deserve honesty about how our work is created.

When AI meaningfully contributes to research, production, or creative development, we are committed to using it responsibly and transparently while ensuring the final work reflects our editorial standards.

Editorial Independence

Afros in tha City is an independent publication.

Neither AI systems, advertisers, sponsors, nor commercial interests determine our editorial direction. Story selection, coverage, and editorial decisions remain independent and guided by our mission to document culture with integrity.

Creativity Belongs to People

AI is a tool—not a creator.

The journalism, photography, artwork, writing, interviews, and creative expression featured by Afros in tha City belong to the people who create them. We believe technology should amplify creativity, not diminish the value of human artistry.

Our Commitment

Since our founding in 2015, Afros in tha City has existed to document, celebrate, and preserve the stories shaping Black culture and the African diaspora.

As technology evolves, our commitment remains the same.

We will continue to embrace innovation responsibly while protecting the principles that matter most: accuracy, independence, transparency, respect, and community.
