Our Mission

Afros in tha City exists to document, celebrate, and preserve the stories shaping Black culture across Canada and the global African diaspora.

We believe journalism is more than reporting events—it is creating a historical record, building understanding, and strengthening communities through thoughtful storytelling.

Every story we publish is guided by our commitment to independence, accuracy, fairness, and cultural respect.

Editorial Principles

Accuracy

We make every reasonable effort to verify information before publication.

Our reporting may include interviews, firsthand observation, official statements, public records, and independent research. When facts cannot be independently verified, we clearly distinguish between verified information, opinion, and commentary.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, sponsors, political organizations, governments, or commercial interests.

Financial support allows Afros in tha City to continue publishing but never guarantees editorial coverage or editorial influence.

Fairness

We strive to present people and communities with honesty, context, and dignity.

Where appropriate, we seek multiple perspectives while recognizing that balance does not always require giving equal weight to misinformation or harmful narratives.

Community Journalism

Afros in tha City practices relationship-based journalism.

We invest in long-term relationships with artists, organizations, entrepreneurs, and community leaders because trust produces stronger journalism.

Being connected to our community does not reduce our independence—it strengthens our understanding.

Corrections

If we publish inaccurate information, we will correct it promptly.

Significant corrections will be acknowledged openly to maintain trust with our readers.

Respect

We respect the privacy, dignity, and safety of the people we feature.

Whenever possible, we seek informed participation and accurate representation while recognizing that stories involve real people whose lives continue after publication.

Independence of Voice

Afros in tha City welcomes diverse opinions while maintaining editorial oversight.

Guest contributors, interviews, and opinion pieces represent their own perspectives and do not necessarily reflect those of the publication.

Long-Term Stewardship

Our publication exists as an archive of Black history in Canada.

Every issue contributes to a permanent record intended to educate future generations and preserve stories that might otherwise be lost.
